ICOMAM 50: Papers on arms and military history 1957 – 2007

This volume celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of ICOMAM, the Inernational Committee of Museums and Collections of Arms and Military History, now an International Committee of ICOM (the International Council of Museums). Since its foundation in 1957, ICOMAM, formely known as IAMAM (the International Association of Museums of Arms and Military History) has been the professional organisation representing and providing a forum for museums of arms and military history from all around the world.

Alongside new papers on aspects of the history of arms and armor, military history and their museums this volume contains some of the best papers from past IAMAM/ICOMAM Congresses, many of which have previously been inaccessible. The selection is intended to show the range an quality of the research work of our members over the last half century.

ICOMAM symposium 2006, Proceedings Actes

There are the proceedings of ICOMAM’s first ever symposium on military uniforms. The subject brought a good many new faces to our meeting, attracted by the subject matter to brave a conference with historians of arms and military history. They did much to enliven our proceedings and broaden our perspectives and we hope to see them again. Amongst our established members and regular attendees there were some who were, at first, a little uncertain whether the theme would interest them.

The papers presented were varied, interesting and of a very high standard. It is thanks to the hard work and generosity of the management and staff of the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and of Military History, Brussels that this fine volume comes to you and I thank them for this on behalf of us all. For those who attended the symposium in Brussels in the autumn of 2006 these pages will provide a permanent memorial of a splendid event. For those who did not, I hope the quality of the papers will encourage you to join us in the future for one of our increasingly varied special symposia.
